According to the Estonian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Finland is ready to take in up to 100 Ukrainian refugees per week, who themselves have expressed their desire to relocate. The target group primarily includes citizens of Ukraine who do not yet have temporary protection, or a valid residence permit in Estonia or another country.

Interior Minister Lauri Läänemets noted that in the field of accepting Ukrainian refugees, Estonia is approaching the borderline, when it will be impossible to offer all the necessary support services and assistance at a sufficiently high-quality level to arriving new refugees.

“Until now, we have been able to provide all those arriving with the proper level of support and services, but as the number of refugees has increased, we have already turned to our northern neighbours for support in a timely manner and in advance,” the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said.

The official also stressed that the move to Finland is not a pressure or demand from the Estonian side, but a voluntary decision of the refugees.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, about 66,000 refugees from Ukraine have announced their intention to stay in Estonia, more than 42,000 applications for temporary protection have been submitted.
