According to Mr. Karpenko, “93 foreign (international) observers have already been approved to oversee the election, including the CIS mission, members of parliament, the Non-Aligned Movement Youth Organisation representatives, foreign electoral officials, and independent observers.”

He added that he’d met the head of the CIS observer mission Sergei Lebedev on December 18th.

“Mr. Lebedev informed me that the mission’s headquarters started operations in the CIS Executive Committee building in Minsk. Over 50 long-term observers will work from there. About 150 more will arrive in Minsk a day or two ahead of the election,” the CEC Chairman explained.

The meeting was focused on registering candidates for the office of the President of the Republic of Belarus. Issues related to voting ballot form and contents and setting up polling stations for certain categories of voters, as well as a draw of TV and radio slots for Presidential candidates to make their electoral appearances in were also on the agenda.
