Eismont: sanctions and ‘recognition’ not discussed by Lukashenko and Merkel

Belarus’ Head of State, Aleksandr Lukashenko, did not discuss sanctions and ‘recognition’ with the Acting Federal Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, as it would have been beneath him – as the Press Secretary of the President of Belarus, Natalya Eismont, told RIA Novosti, BelTA reports

Earlier, Estonia’s Foreign Minister, Eva-Maria Liimets, said that Aleksandr Lukashenko had spoken of his recognition as the President of Belarus and lifting of sanctions as conditions for terminating the migration crisis on the EU borders. Allegedly, the Belarusian Head of State voiced these conditions to Ms. Merkel during their telephone conversation on Monday.

"It would have been beneath President Lukashenko to raise such issues during the conversation or to put forward such conditions. Not a single word about sanctions, and even more so about some kind of ‘recognition’ was said during the talks. Moreover, there is no such question for Belarusian society which has elected Aleksandr Lukashenko as the country’s President,” Ms. Eismont said.

According to her, the statement of the Estonian Foreign Minister indicates that Estonia actually knows nothing and means nothing for the process that is currently underway to resolve the refugee problem.

"Estonia’s Foreign Minister should keep in mind that transcripts of these conversations are stored both in Belarus and in Germany. Estonia can address its EU partners and they might provide it with true information," Ms. Eismont added.
