Effectiveness of Sputnik V against Omicron exceeds 70%

According to preliminary data, the effectiveness of the Sputnik V vaccine against the new Omicron variant ranges from 70 to 85 percent, said Georgy Vikulov, infectious and immunology diseases specialist, clinical virologist, Ph.D.

“Rating journals, and not only The Lancet, publish updated data, according to which Sputnik V is effective against Delta and Omicron strains. Of course, this indicator is lower than in relation to Alpha variant, but nevertheless it is high. If the effectiveness of the drug against the Wuhan variant is about 91 percent, and in the prevention of severe forms it is almost 100 percent, then for Delta and Omicron, the figures vary, according to preliminary data, from 70 to 85 percent,” explained Mr. Vikulov.

At the same time, the virologist drew attention to the fact that those patients who had COVID-19 and received one vaccination have longer protection against coronavirus.

“An Israeli study has shown that hybrid immunity – natural immunity from an infection combined with the immunity provided by the vaccine – is more effective than natural immunity alone or vaccination alone,” stated the doctor.
