Economy Ministry on development of Belarus’ human potential, economy and environment until 2040

Belarus’ National Strategy for Sustainable Development until 2040 envisages the country’s joining the top 50 states in terms of GDP per capita, the preservation of the environment and the demographic balance – as noted by Economy Minister Yuri Chebotar

Speaking about the main priorities and tasks outlined in the strategy, Mr. Chebotar emphasised that three key sections receive attention, “These include the development of human potential, the economy and ecology. We actually set ambitious goals in the economic sphere: to enter the top 50 countries in terms of GDP per capita, taking into account purchasing power parity. It is a very ambitious task, which envisages a doubling of growth in 15 years. As for ecology, the key factors are focused on our living environment and comfort – so that we can be healthy and live longer. In turn, the human potential covers the demographic balance, education, and healthcare.”

The Economy Minister also drew attention to the fact that the National Strategy for Sustainable Development is a key document describing the forecast and vision of the country's future. “This strategy will be significantly different from the previous ones: it will contain more than 90 indicators, which has never been the case. The ambitious tasks have been set, since we see that the world is developing very dynamically, and Belarus accordingly needs to move at a pace much higher than the global one. After the strategy’s approval, all industries and regions will have to develop their own development strategies for the coming 10-15 years. This process has already begun, and draft strategies have been prepared already,” he explained.

Mr. Chebotar added that appropriate plans are needed to achieve the ambitious goals. According to him, they will be achieved through the country's socio-economic development programme and the target plans, which are expected to be adopted annually.
