Economic liaisons of Union State regions

Prospects of interregional co-operation in the economic sphere of the Union State discussed in Orsha

The city in the Vitebsk Region hosted the 65th session of the permanent seminar at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia. Its participants discussed the economic policy in the innovative spheres, import substitution in food, investment opportunities and other issues.

The key point of the meeting was improvement of the legal foundations of interregional liaisons within the Union State in the economic and humanitarian spheres. The latter will be discussed next week in Russian Smolensk, while, in Orsha, economic aspects received attention. Actually, the city was chosen as a venue for the meeting not accidentally. Until 2023, the Orsha District acts as a basic model for Belarusian cities and regions’ renewal.

Artem Turov, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly Commission on Legislation and Regulations, a member of the State Duma Committee of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation for CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots, believes Orsha’s industrial experience could be interesting to all Russian regions, “As is traditional, we organise our business meetings on the border territories. It is here that the problems are better seen and, at the same time, co-operation and interaction of our countries in various sectors are most pronounced. Shortly speaking, the border area reflects how the Union State is actually being built, and what we, parliamentarians, should primarily pay attention to. In the context of unprecedented external pressure from some western countries on the Russian Federation and Belarus, it is extremely important to develop a joint effective approach to the development of the economy and social sphere. We need to expand co-operation and support each other.”

With this in view, Orsha’s forum has become a new step to the Union State building. It’s definitely important to create grounds for the economic growth which will result in new jobs, projects and more favourable living conditions for the two states’ citizens.

Business partnership in the innovation sphere is another important aspect. “Some companies are already implementing unique modern projects in Belarus and Russia – covering not only the IT sphere. New production facilities are established and this is a chance for our counties to be among the leaders in various sectors of the economy and also to compete in the international market. It’s one of the main tasks that our authorities, including the Union State, should solve,” Mr. Turov said.

The meeting resulted in the development of recommendations to be further sent to the relevant ministries and legislative bodies of Russia and Belarus for decision-making, including in the legislative sphere.
