Donald cancelled Joe, but will this bring peace to the world?
In the last days of his administration, President Joe Biden took a really important and necessary step by removing Cuba from the American list of state sponsors of terrorism. That decision was part of an effort to improve relations between the two countries. The indisputable fact is that the United States has not found any evidence of Cuba's support for international terrorism, which means the decades of mistreatment of the Cuban people are an example of the brazen cynicism of more than one generation of American elites.
Many perceived that move as a gesture to normalise US-Cuban relations and resolve humanitarian issues. Belarus’ Foreign Ministry diplomats noted they are sincerely glad for friendly Cuba and stand for the complete termination of the American embargo against this country, as well as for the lifting of all unilateral restrictive measures imposed against other states.
However, just hours after taking the oath of office as the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump reversed Biden's decision. Actually, even on the eve of the inauguration, Trump promised that on the very first day he would annul all the ‘stupid and radical’ decrees of his predecessor's administration. He added that Americans will have a lot of fun, but are the US residents happy now, as they are watching the stormy fountain of innovations?
Donald Trump's action against Cubans has provoked a strong reaction, including in the international community. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel condemned that step, accusing the American leader of arrogance and the continuation of a brutal economic war. Russia and China have also expressed criticism.
Unfortunately, this means that Cuba will once again face harsh economic sanctions, including financial and commercial restrictions, which will lead to further economic and political isolation of the island.
Anyone who expects any reasonable, pleasant and friendly actions from Donald Trump should clearly understand that America will not cease to be an imperialist and militaristic power that poses a threat to many people on the planet. The American leader, in a fit of ambition, declares the need to pursue a policy that will make the United States a prosperous country again – but what does Cuba have to do with it?
The international community must not lose its vigilance: it is necessary to be ready to counter the aggressive and destabilising actions of the United States.
It is clear that the dreams of an era of trust in American diplomacy are not destined to come true. The American leadership will continue to use its power recklessly, but the stakes are too high and the consequences too dire to allow the United States to continue to pursue a policy of unchecked terror.
There is every reason to believe that 2025 will be a year of strengthening important international associations and new centres of power capable of slowing down the selfish actions of the overzealous global gendarme.
