“Celery contains apigenin, which is very popular in Chinese medicine. It is an anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and antitumor agent. Some studies suggest that it is this substance that promotes apoptosis of cancer cells, actually, their self-eating,” Ms. Bolbat drew attention.

Moreover, according to the nutritionist, the root and leaves of celery are rich in proteins, and its stem is rich in vitamin C and fibre.

“If we talk about women’s health, then celery contains phytoestrogens, which resemble the sex hormone oestrogen in their structure. Therefore, this product is recommended for use in premenstrual syndrome and premenopause. Phytoestrogens also protect bones from osteoporosis,” noted the doctor.

The nutritionist added that celery is rich in vitamin K.

“It is important for the normal absorption of calcium. Vitamin K is recommended to be included in the treatment regimen for osteoporosis. However, celery should be used carefully by people with cardiovascular disease who take blood thinners. The fact is that greens are a source of vitamin K, which can change blood clotting in one direction or another, depending on the amount of such foods in the diet,” explained Ms. Bolbat.

“Celery also contains a huge amount of micro and macro elements: phosphorus, zinc, selenium, manganese... They are necessary not only for immunity, but also for the normal functioning of the nervous system,” added cardiologist Nikolai Gremenok.

Earlier the nutritionist said that a study was conducted at the University of Illinois showing that eating broccoli 3-4 times a week helps reduce the risk of cancer, as well as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
