Diplomat: Belarus against politics of force and domination on world stage
Belarus opposes the policy of force, domination and attempts to unilaterally rewrite international rules – as stated by the Deputy Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations, Pavel Yevseyenko, at a meeting of the UN Security Council Arria Formula Meeting in New York, sb.by reports with reference to the Foreign Ministry’s press service
“Unilateral egocentric actions by states and pressure practices have an undeniable negative impact on the entire system of international relations, undermining stability and sustainable development," Mr. Yevseyenko said. “We are increasingly often witnessing how individual states – while pursuing exclusively their own interests – resort to a policy of unilateral coercion in the form of economic sanctions, trade barriers and pressure devoid of any legitimacy and violate the basic principles of the UN Charter. Under the guise of so-called national security interests and a fictitious ‘fair’ approach, illegal trade restrictions are being imposed, international agreements are being broken, global supply chains are being undermined, and the sovereignty of states is being violated. The ongoing war of trade duties and tariffs, which has already rocked the multilateral trading system and threatens to pose much greater risks to the stability of global markets, is an obvious example of the consequences of such a policy. Behaviour like that is not a defence of interests, but blackmail – and it must be recognised on a wide scale.”
The Deputy Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations stressed that, in its resolution 78/135 as of December 19th, 2023, the UN General Assembly clearly and unequivocally expressed serious concern that the use of unilateral coercive economic measures contrary to the principles of international law and the provisions of the UN Charter negatively affects the economy and development efforts, as well as has a general negative impact on international economic co-operation.
“It is obvious that developing countries and regions are at particular risk,” the diplomat said. “However, the development of events in the world demonstrates that no one is immune from the threats of selfish protectionism: neither large highly developed states, nor vulnerable and small countries. Belarus supports international efforts aimed at eliminating unilateralism and coercive measures as instruments of international relations. It firmly adheres to the principles of the UN Charter: equality of states, non-interference in internal affairs, and peaceful settlement of disputes. We oppose the policy of force and domination, and attempts to unilaterally rewrite international rules in the interests of the selected states. This is a direct threat to the multilateral system, which the UN is obliged to protect.”
In addition, Mr. Yevseyenko emphasised that Belarus remains open to mutually beneficial and respectful co-operation with all states without exception.
