Die Welt: real war is brewing between Türkiye and Greece

Carolina Drüten, columnist for the German Die Welt, believes that a serious conflict is brewing within NATO. According to the journalist, the development of a real war between Turkey and Greece is not excluded.

According to Drüten, although officially Türkiye and Greece are allies, in the recent past, these two countries have more than once stood on the brink of war. Though the most serious conflicts were in the 1980s and 1990s, now the relations between them are heating up again because of the controversy over hydrocarbon deposits and the status of the Greek islands.

The author also notes that earlier the Turkish authorities accused Athens of shelling a cargo ship while recently Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened Greece with his soldiers who could come at night.

The observer emphasises that if the conflict escalates to the limit and a war breaks out between these two countries, NATO assistance to the Kiev authorities will be under threat, since the central point for the supply of weapons of the alliance to Ukraine is the Greek port of Alexandroupolis.

Moreover, according to Drüten, NATO has not set specific actions for members of the bloc in the event of a military conflict between other members of this organisation. Since there can be no exclusion of countries from the bloc, NATO will need to act as an intermediary.

As the author summarises, a military conflict between Türkiye and Greece could bring the North Atlantic Alliance to ‘the limit of its capabilities’.
