According to the US official, the American side considers SORT important for strengthening the security not only of the United States, but also of Russia. “It [SORT] strengthens the security of the United States, our allies and partners, and it also strengthens the security of Russia and the world. Therefore, we are working to preserve the treaty,” Mr. Patel said.

On February 21st, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in his address to the Federal Assembly that the Russian Federation was suspending participation in the Russian-American Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty (New START), noting that the country was not withdrawing from the treaty. According to the Russian leader, before returning to the discussion, it is necessary to understand what countries such as France and Britain claim, and how to take into account their strategic arsenal. An official note on the suspension of the Russian side's participation in the treaty was handed over to Washington on February 28th.
