The 63rd sitting of the joint advisory group on arms control of the defence ministries of Belarus and Russia has been held today in Minsk, gathering also representatives of the foreign ministries of the two countries. The agenda included issues of global and regional security, the state and prospects of bilateral co-operation in the field of arms control in the current conditions of the military-political situation.

Valery Revenko, the Chief of the International Military Co-operation Department, Assistant to the Defence Minister for International Military Co-operation, met with the meeting participants. “The current military-political situation and the tectonic processes developing in the international security system make it necessary for us to outline new conceptual views and approaches to the architecture of international security and arms control," he stressed.

The Major General expressed confidence that, after a period of crisis and stagnation, the issue of arms control in Europe will once again become an urgent item on the international agenda and the subject of international legal regulation.

Following the meeting, the Assistant to the Defence Minister for International Military Co-operation noted that it was constructive.

Mr. Revenko revealed a number of issues under discussion, “The meeting discussed primarily the issues of transparency during the Zapad-2025 exercises: who will be invited, which states will be present on the territory of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation. One of the topics on the agenda was the verification in the post-conflict period on the territory of Ukraine. We have found constructive approaches to joint activities in this matter between Russia and Belarus. A range of issues related to the implementation of confidence and security measures within the framework of the Vienna Document 2011 was discussed. In particular, we focused on the issues of regional confidence and security measures with our neighbours: the Republic of Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia. We will continue our efforts to bring our positions closer and reduce tension on the borders of the Belarusian state: differently speaking, the proposals we made to Poland on verification activities to a depth of 80km remain in force.”
