Death toll from January riots in Kazakhstan exceeds 200

Over 200 people were killed in violent unrest in Kazakhstan in early 2022, with Almay seeing the biggest number of victims – as announced by the Prosecutor General of Kazakhstan, Berik Asylov, TASS reports

“As far as the victims of those events are concerned... In total, 230 people have been killed in the country, including 19 law enforcement officers and military personnel, with Almay seeing the biggest number of victims: 139 people,” Berik Asylov cited the figures.

According to the Prosecutor General of Kazakhstan, 20 people were killed when they accidentally came under fire. “Among them are those who fell under the crossfire, there are those who died at the hands of the rioters, as well as those who did not obey the demands of the military at checkpoints,” he specified.

He also told how many law enforcement officers suffered as a result of the protests, “You have seen footage of policemen and soldiers, who are 18-20 years old, being severely beaten and abused. There are about 3,500 wounded among the security forces, accounting for 80 percent of all those who were injured in those days.”
