Cyberspace transforming into theatre of military operations, Volfovich says
Cyberspace is now turning into an independent theatre of military operations – as stated by the State Secretary of the Security Council, Aleksandr Volfovich, in his talk with the Natsionalnaya Oborona [National Defence] Russian magazine, BelTA reports
"We can see now how cyberspace is transforming into an independent theatre of military operations. The circle of states creating cyber troops – whose tasks include, among other things, conducting preventive offensive operations, intelligence and subversive activities – is expanding,” Mr. Volfovich said.
According to the State Secretary of the Security Council, although battles of the kind are observed in the virtual space, real damage is actually inflicted daily on the critical infrastructure of certain states.
“The development of new spaces for conducting military operations by the leading countries cannot but arouse concern. In particular, space is recognised by NATO as such an operational venue – though the United States has recently announced its refusal to test anti-satellite weapons, this does not mean that Washington has not created such weapons and has not put them into service with the space forces. In this case, a unilateral moratorium can be regarded as an appeal to other countries that have not completed such tests to stop their own developments in this area," Mr. Volfovich noted.
