Culture Minister: 164 objects under protection in Belarus

An international scientific and practical seminar – Preservation of CIS Intangible Cultural Heritage in Context of Global Challenges – gathered experts, representatives of state management bodies, research organisations, cultural and educational institutions from eight countries at the CIS Executive Committee’s headquarters, and Culture Minister Anatoly Markevich stated that Belarus had become a good platform for discussion

“The topic of preserving intangible cultural heritage has been chosen not accidentally. Our world is full of challenges and attempts not only to exert economic and political influence on our countries, but also to impose alien ideas and ideals. This is unacceptable, and we should discuss these problems,” Mr. Markevich addressed those present.

In Belarus, the issue of cultural heritage preservation has never been neglected: 164 objects from the State List of Historical and Cultural Values are protected in the country. As noted by Mr. Markevich, Belarusians also continue to promote its heritage on global scales: in late November, the fifth element – straw weaving – will be proposed by the country for inclusion in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage at the 17th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee.

“This step is important for us – since we can show our values and tell people of Belarus. We are open to those who want to come to us, visit unique places and touch our historical truth with good intentions and thoughts. We have something to show and offer,” the official said.
