Corruption must be eradicated

Co-ordinating Council of CIS Prosecutors General, featuring Belarus’ Prosecutor General Andrei Shved, took place in Nur-Sultan to share the member states’ professional experience

The meeting was also attended by the prosecutors general of Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Moldova, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan, as well as representatives of the Secretariat of the Co-ordinating Council and the CIS Executive Committee. Among the guests of honour was Cheol-Kyu Hwang, the President of the International Association of Prosecutors.

In his report, Andrei Shved informed on the work and strategy to combat corruption in Belarus which is viewed as a threat to national security. “Countering this phenomenon is among the priorities of our state policy," he stressed.

The Prosecutor General clarified some details of the programme to combat crime and corruption which is being realised in the country until 2022, and also commented on the legislative initiatives prepared by the Prosecutor General's Office.

“Our efforts to fight corruption are positively appreciated domestically and abroad. Since the adoption of our anti-corruption law, the Republic has improved its position in the annual Transparency International rating and was placed 63rd in 2020 – against 106th in 2015. At the same time, an ambitious task was set to develop a national anti-corruption strategy up to 2030. It takes into account international standards and the best foreign anti-corruption practices and aims to ensure a systematic counteraction to corruption by eliminating its underlying causes and conditions,” Mr. Shved stressed.

As part of his visit to Nur-Sultan, Mr. Shved also met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Kazakhstan, Pavel Utyupin. The sides discussed the two states’ economic co-operation, also focusing on the development of a commodity distribution network for Belarusian enterprises in Kazakhstan.
