CIS heads to meet in Minsk

Council of the CIS Heads of State planned to be held in person – as informed by the Chairman of the Executive Committee – the CIS Executive Secretary, Sergei Lebedev

According to the official, the agendas of the upcoming meetings of the Council of Foreign Ministers and the Council of CIS Heads of State – scheduled to be held on October 14th-15th in Minsk – are now being co-ordinated. “The approval process is always quite intensive and takes much time but is now on its final stage. We hope to finally agree on all the issues which the foreign ministers and the CIS leaders will discuss,” he said.

Among them is the adoption of a statement on the 30th anniversary of the Commonwealth of Independent States which – as Mr. Lebedev stressed – is supposed to be signed by the heads of state on October 15th in Minsk. “This statement will focus on the path which has been already passed and will give a look into the future – which is of special importance. These days, many Commonwealth states are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their independence – which is a significant date. Importantly, we’ve remained to co-exist within the CIS and have preserved virtually millions of ties that connected our peoples for centuries,” he stressed.

In addition, the heads of state are expected to name the Moldovan city of Comrat ‘the cultural capital of the Commonwealth’ in 2023. Other issues on the agenda will include cultural and humanitarian co-operation, as well as political interaction. “We are all interested in ensuring peace, stability and favourable conditions for further progressing in our countries. The problems which one of the Commonwealth states has to solve are becoming common. We sincerely empathise when sad events occur, and we rejoice in the achievements of our friends. At the same time, the escalation of events in Afghanistan has once again confirmed the need for close co-ordination of our activities,” added Mr. Lebedev.
