China developed world’s first drone capable of flying and swimming underwater
Chinese scientists have developed the world’s first drone that can be launched from a submarine and can both float underwater and fly, RIA Novosti reports citing The South China Morning Post
According to the scientists, the unique folding wing design allows the drone to move between water and air several times per flight, greatly improving its camouflage and survival capabilities.
The blades that the device uses for flight fold up in water in 5 seconds and fit tightly to the fuselage, which greatly reduces water resistance, and special propellers ensure movement underwater. The drone is launched from a submarine, and returns to the same submarine when the mission is complete. Due to its high manoeuvrability in the air and the ability to operate in water, the device can be used for reconnaissance and strike missions.
