China built 654,000 new 5G base stations in 2021

China accelerated development of its 5G networks last year – building 654,000 new base stations. At the moment, almost 1.43m 5G base stations are operational – as informed by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Xinhua reports

It is stated that 5G networks now cover all urban districts, more than 98 percent of urban zones in counties and 80 percent of urban zones in towns across China.

In 2021, sales of 5G smartphones increased by 63.5 percent year-on-year to make 266m – thus demonstrating a steady growth.
