China’s BYD and DJI companies unveiled intelligent vehicle-mounted UAV systems
Chinese automaker BYD and global drone giant DJI have launched a vehicle-mounted intelligent drone system. The new development is designed to turn autos into a mobile platform for entertainment and exploration, Xinhua reports.
The new system, called Lingyuan, is designed to integrate drones and cars and is available for all BYD brand lines. It is capable of capturing and transmitting video from a vertical height in real time, in sync with the car’s movement, BYD announced in Shenzhen, a leading technology hub in South China’s Guangdong Province.
According to Senior Vice President of BYD Group Yang Dongsheng, the world’s first innovative solution of a retractable car-mounted drone parking device has been developed to power the Lingyuan system, which will allow the drone to perform dynamic take-offs and landings, as well as fast charging and storage. The drone’s return is ensured with just the push of a button from the car’s interior.
“The co-operation between BYD and DJI brings much more than just installing a drone on a car,” said BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu at the new product’s launch event, explaining that they started from the level of basic technology, integrating vehicle and drone technologies in a way that enhances both.
For his part, DJI President Luo Zhenhua noted that the technology is not meant to create some toys for the few, but should serve as a universally accessible toolkit for the world. According to him, the BYD and DJI partnership is not only aimed at product innovation, but also at restructuring the mobility ecosystem.
