The politician stressed that protest actions have been gaining momentum on the territory of Germany, “An increasing number of residents oppose to the supply of heavy weapons and the continuation of the conflict. For example, more than 50,000 people have recently taken to the streets of Berlin in order to show that people want a diplomatic solution to the conflict through negotiations. They are in favour of an early settlement of the crisis and are against the supply of weapons.”

Mr. Schmidt also emphasised that ordinary Germans do not want their country to end up fully involved in the conflict.

“I think the longer the Ukrainian conflict will last, the more an anti-war movement in the country will grow, and even more people will participate in such peaceful rallies for the cessation of hostilities. In general, war fatigue is growing. People are unhappy that Germany is paying the highest price [by supplying weapons], and many of them are not ready to pay out of their own pocket, or to the detriment of their own security," the deputy summed up.
