The document addresses eight main topics, such as implementing tougher environmental regulations, incorporating circular economy principles and actively promoting educational programmes.

Ana Paula Prates, the Director of the Department of Ocean and Coastal Management at Brazil’s Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, highlighted the country’s significant role in protecting the marine environment.

She also emphasised that plastic pollution is a serious threat to marine ecosystems, harming both biodiversity and human health. According to her, Brazil, with its diverse marine plant and animal life, needs to tackle this issue in a thorough and systematic way.

Within the regulatory measures, the use of microplastics in cosmetics and personal care products will be prohibited, and the production of single-use plastics will be gradually eliminated. There will be a particular focus on enhancing waste collection and recycling efforts.
