Bomb shelters prepared in Taiwan able to accommodate three times total population of the island
The Taiwanese authorities plan to equip more than 10 thousand shelters to survive in rocket and bomb attacks, and they will be able to accommodate three times the total population of the island: 86m people, Japanese Nikkei reports
As noted, such shelters are being built all over Taiwan, but most of them are not designed for a long stay. Underground premises, including parking lots, will be used for this purpose. Since the 1970s, according to local legislation, all buildings with a height of more than six floors must be equipped with such premises.
In addition, in August 2022, the authorities of the capital recommended that its citizens download a special application to their smartphones in order to quickly find out the location of the nearest bomb shelter, if necessary. Taiwan’s administrative centre has more than 5,700 such facilities at the moment, able to accommodate about 13m people (almost five times the population of the city).
Currently, approximately 24m people, including foreigners, live in Taiwan. The island has been governed by its own administration since 1949, but Beijing views it as an integral part of China.
