Bloomberg: Italy plans to withdraw from China's One Belt, One Road initiative due to US pressure
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the country's intention to withdraw from the Chinese One Belt, One Road project due to pressure from Washington, Bloomberg reports with reference to sources
It is noted that Ms. Meloni assured the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, during their recent meeting in Rome that her government stands for withdrawing from China's large-scale One Belt, One Road initiative, although no final decision has not yet been made.
It is emphasised that Washington exerted enormous pressure on Rome in this matter.
According to Bloomberg, Ms. Meloni's advisers are currently discussing the details and timing of the decision. At the same time, the Italian leadership is concerned about possible retaliatory measures on the part of China.
The global project of the People's Republic of China – One Belt, One Road – is an initiative of Xi Jinping, and it is aimed at developing economic co-operation at the international level with China’s participation. The project now covers 78 countries in Asia, Africa and Europe.
