Belarusian experts studied Hungarian experience in radioactive waste management

A regular meeting of the Belarusian-Hungarian working group for co-operation in the field of nuclear energy was held in Hungary on December 9th-10th, sb.by reports citing the Belarusian Energy Ministry’s press service

On the Belarusian side, the meeting was attended by representatives of the Energy Ministry, the Belenergo Production Association, the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP), the Belarusian Radioactive Waste Management Organisation, and on the Hungarian side by representatives of the Paks NPP and Paks-2 NPP, and the Public Agency for Radioactive Waste Management (Puram).

Belarusian specialists have studied the Hungarian experience in the field of radioactive waste management, familiarised themselves with technologies in this area, including disposal, and visited the radioactive waste storage facility in Bataapati.

Separately, the issues of spent nuclear fuel management were discussed. The meeting participants also visited the temporary storage facility for spent nuclear fuel at the Paks nuclear power plant. A protocol was signed at the end of the meeting.

“As part of the planned construction of a radioactive waste disposal facility in Belarus, considerable attention is being paid to the study of international experience, available technologies for radioactive waste management and best practices. Co-operation with Hungarian experts is another step in this direction. In general, the Belarusian-Hungarian liaisons in the nuclear energy sector are gradually expanding. Experience is exchanged on key issues for the industry: NPP operation, nuclear infrastructure development, personnel training, and scheduled maintenance work. On December 11th, the members of the working group discussed the results and prospects of the partnership at a meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to Hungary Uladzimir Ulakhovich. Significant potential for further development of bilateral ties was noted,” the Energy Ministry’s press service added.
