In the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, Dmitry Karbyshev worked as an inspector of the construction of fortifications in the Grodno fortified area. In August 1941, the man was seriously wounded and captured during the fighting in the Mogilev Region. Refusing to co-operate with the Nazis, he was tortured and moved to various concentration camps. Since the autumn of 1944, he was in the Mauthausen concentration camp.
On the cold night of February 17th-18th, 1945, Dmitry was brutally executed: he and other prisoners were taken out, doused with ice water and beaten with batons by order of the camp commander. That act became one of the many tragic pages in the history of Nazi crimes.
In 1963, a monument was erected on the territory of the former Mauthausen concentration camp in memory of General Karbyshev's feat, symbolising the courage and indomitable will of the Soviet man.
Streets in Minsk, Brest and Grodno are named after Dmitry Karbyshev.
