Belarus urges to think about economic consequences of sanctions policy

The use of food and logistics chains as an instrument of political pressure and economic blackmail is the height of cynicism and deliberate provocation – as stated by the Deputy Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations, Pavel Yevseenko, at a meeting of the UN Commission on Population and Development, BelTA reports

The Belarusian diplomat noted that, literally at last year's session, the Commission stressed in its resolution that food security, nutrition and food safety are key elements of poverty eradication in all its forms and manifestations. It then called for intensified efforts to transform food systems to make them more sustainable to achieve food security in the developing countries.

“We regret to state that this good intention has remained exclusively on paper,” Mr. Yevseenko said. "Despite the fact that Belarus has been living under the sanctions pressure of the collective West for the second year, our country's economy is successfully coping with the impact of these negative measures."

However, this cannot be said about the economies of the countries that initiated reckless unilateral sanctions measures, as well as the developing countries that are directly dependent on supplies – i.e. Belarusian potash fertilisers.

"Against the background of the fact that almost two billion people in the world are malnourished, the use of food and logistics chains as an instrument of political pressure and economic blackmail is the height of cynicism and deliberate provocation, which has led to record inflation and a drop in the standard of living of ordinary people today," the diplomat said.

Mr. Yevseenko stressed that Belarus urges an end to the aggressive policy that is now continuing to undermine the economic systems affected by the coronavirus pandemic, while pushing the world to the abyss of poverty and hunger.

"The sustainable development of any nation today depends on a dialogue, actions and decisions of all countries. In this regard, Belarus confirms its readiness to continue constructive, mutually beneficial and respectful co-operation with all international partners," the Deputy Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN summed up.
