Belarus is among top ten carp producers in Europe

Belarus is one of the ten largest carp producers in Europe due to a significant number of fish farms, the development of fish farming, and the availability of its own genetic material of adapted breeds and breed groups – as noted by Vladimir Kostousov, the Deputy Director of the Fish Industry Institute at the Scientific and Practical Centre for Animal Husbandry of Belarus’ National Academy of Sciences

According to Mr. Kostousov, carp pond fish farming is the backbone of the country’s fishery complex, which currently accounts for over 96 percent of the commercial production.

The freshwater aquaculture industry in China and countries in the Asian region is predominantly based on carp fish. India and Bangladesh grow native carps on a large scale. Carp is the traditional and most widely farmed species in Central and Eastern Europe. Its total world production is 4 million tonnes. It is an important species on which the economies of entire regions are built. Belarus is among the largest carp producers in Europe. The prospects for further development of this industry in our country are related to the development of an innovative system of fishery management, application of modern technical solutions that will increase the volume of fish production and reduce its cost,” the specialist emphasised.
