Belarus’ House of Representatives Chairman: increasing economic influence of BRICS may change balance of power in international arena
Sergei Rachkov, the Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives, delivered a report at a meeting of the Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs held as part of the events of the 150th IPU Assembly: Growing Role of BRICS in International Relations, Consequences for the United Nations
As recalled by Mr. Rachkov, Belarus enjoys the status of a BRICS partner state since January 1st, 2025. “We view BRICS as an authoritative international platform that unites the efforts of the Global Majority aimed at creating genuine multipolarity, equality and inclusivity in international relations, and searching for effective ways to solve pressing problems," the parliamentarian stressed. “Joining BRICS became a well-thought-out and conscious step in Belarus' foreign policy. It is with BRICS that many countries, including Belarus, pin their hopes on the transformation of the international system towards a just multipolar world order.”
At the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, President of the Republic of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko stated, “BRICS is a community of the future. In terms of its potential, it can hasten the end of the era of dominance by the collective West, which has proven unable to take responsibility for the civilised development of international relations.”
"We see that an increase in the economic influence of BRICS may lead to a change in the traditional balance of power in international politics," Mr. Rachkov said. “The BRICS countries that represent developing economies are able to challenge the dominance of Western countries in international relations, which can lead to a more diverse and balanced representation of interests on the global stage.”
The Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs added that, at the plenary session of the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum, the Belarusian delegation proposed holding a parliamentary security summit in the BRICS+ format and noted the fundamental need to strengthen the parliamentary dimension of BRICS, ensure the convergence of the legal systems of the participating states and create conditions for comprehensive integration based on decisions and recommendations made.
