Belarus celebrates National Unity Day

The country is celebrating National Unity Day for the first time. This holiday refers to the events of September 17th, 1939 when Western Belarus and the BSSR – split as a result of the 1921 Riga Peace Treaty – were reunited.

The idea of establishing National Unity Day was voiced in February 2021 at the 6th Belarusian People's Congress. President Aleksandr Lukashenko supported the initiative and signed a decree on the establishment of a new state holiday on June 7th.

In honour of the significant date, solemn events are held countrywide today.
