On January 12th, the Swedish Ambassador in Ankara was summoned to the Foreign Ministry of Türkiye and was issued a protest in connection with the propaganda directed against President Tayyip Erdoğan in Stockholm at the action of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), banned in Türkiye.

“We condemn the disgusting and heinous actions in Stockholm, directed against our President. We have conveyed to the Swedish authorities our reaction and expectations regarding them. They must take concrete steps. As long as terrorist organisations are not put to an end [in Sweden], progress on the question of its accession to NATO is impossible,” Turkish President’s spokesman wrote on his page in the social network.

In connection with the exacerbation of the Ukrainian conflict, on May 18th, Finland and Sweden submitted applications for joining NATO to its Secretary General. To date, only two countries out of 30 have not ratified their application: Hungary and Türkiye.
