Social support of unemployed is major focus of new general agreement signed by Government, and Republican associations of employers and trade unions for 2016-2018, during session of National Council on Labour and Social Issues

The Chairman of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus, Mikhail Orda, noted that the new agreement envisages the provision of a proper level of social protection for employees, observing labour rights and guarantees, while creating secure conditions for employment and an efficient mechanism of control. The social protection of employees will be strengthened.

“Over the last year, the number of unemployed has risen,” stated Mr. Orda. “Taking into account the necessity of modernising enterprises and attracting investments, this trend is likely to continue so it’s vital to take steps to protect those who may be left without work as a result of these processes. An active employment policy is a priority. It’s necessary to increase unemployment benefits, so that they equate to the minimum wage for able-bodied citizens. We’ve expanded the range of people who are given preference at times of need for reducing personnel, such as those due to retire within three years, those who have sustained injury and those who have contracted illness while working.”
