Belarus’ top tennis player, Victoria Azarenko, to play on national team for qualifying tournament of Fed Cup

Victoria AzarenkoThe Head of the Belarusian Tennis Federation, Alexander Shakutin, recently met Ms. Azarenko — the London-2012 Olympic champion — to confirm her participation in the Fed Cup.

The event is being held in early February, 2015, in Hungarian Budapest. At the preliminary stage, the national team of Belarus will play in Group D, against Bulgaria, Portugal and Turkey. Group A comprises Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Croatia; B is Great Britain, Hungary, Latvia, and Romania; and C features Austria, Israel, Slovenia, and Ukraine. The best teams from each group will continue to the following round.

The national team of Belarus stands in 24th position, with those of the Czech Republic, Italy and Russia leading.

Victoria, aged 25, is currently aiming for the 2016 Olympic Games, being held in Rio de Janeiro, and must play in at least two matches for her national team in order to qualify.

This season has been far from successful for Victoria, having been knocked off her high ranking by injury and then defeat at all her tournaments. She has dropped out of the season, to avoid further injury, and is currently seeded 24th by the Women’s Tennis Association.
