The Myadel District is to be found on the edge of our country, where it has always been a struggle to achieve good harvests and high milk yields. Yet for many years, thousands of visitors both from Belarus and abroad have flocked to  the region to improve their health in the numerous resorts on the shores of Lake Naroch.

Ilya Shatko, Chairman of the Myadel District Executive Committee, is proud of the high popularity of the area. It was ranked third in a poll of most popular resorts throughout the former USSR. Mr. Shatko is pleased with the progress that has been made to develop and care for the area and is appreciative of the benefits tourism brings to the region. Myadel is not only comprised of the famous Lake Naroch however, its sanatoriums, the famous Zubrenok Children’s Educational and Recreation Centre and the National Park are equally important. In addition, there are many other sights worth visiting, the Budslav Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary with its famous festival, the Blue Lakes and the local winery (which is the only one in the country where Apple Calvados is produced). There are also several famous names to be celebrated here. A monument to the poet Maxim Tank has recently been erected. Other notable citizens of the district include the People’s Artists Maria Zakharevich and Vasily Sharangovich and the Hero of the Socialist Labour Party, Eduard Tikhy. All these prominent people were invited to the celebrations, where honours were awarded by the veteran of the Great Patriotic War, Mikhail Gershenovich Gordon.

Artist Vasily Sharangovich didn’t come empty handed, but presented a picture in turn, in appreciation of the inspiration given to him by the district. He commented on the sights of the villagers in their festival costumes, hard working men and beauty of the landscape as playing a big role in his creative motivation.
