‘A modest recovery’, is how one analyst described statistics which show a rise in tourists to Egypt. Arrivals have shot up nearly 70 percent in the third quarter of this year compared to last year. European countries have eased or lifted travel advisories giving the green light to market the land of the pharaohs.
“Things have become very slow during the past four years of revolution. The entire country came to a standstill, tourism stopped and the people who wanted to take cruises down the Nile stopped doing so,” boatmaker Rashan Shaaban explained.
The main growth in numbers has been to Cairo with the Tourist Ministry saying hotel occupancy rates jumped from between 10 and 20 percent a year ago to nearly 50 percent.
One analyst stressed if the improvement can be sustained it could generate an additional 2.6 billion Euros or 1.2 percent of gross domestic product.
