Belarus’ sports enthusiasts have long been looking forward to this moment, especially with news agencies reporting nearly every week that another former champion handed over his or her trophies to the future museum. Finally, the chief sporting treasury of the country has opened its doors to welcome the first visitors.
There is certainly a lot to see here: photos of the first Belarusian female cyclist Alexandra Serafimovich and first USSR athletics champion Lyubov Shevchenko, three-time Olympic champion Alexander Medved and the gold medalist of the most recent Olympics in Athens Igor Makarov…
One can also see personal belongings of the heroes and numerous cups and medals. “These are not just gifts to the museum,” said Alexander Medved when he presented his awards. “This is a gift to future generations, for those who forgot their past, have no future.”
