Teachers scrutinising textbooks

By 2020, around 200 new textbooks will appear in schools, meeting the needs of a programme approved by the Education Ministry. According to Belarus’ Deputy Prime Minister, Natalia Kochanova, two new textbooks in history are being piloted with sixth grade pupils from September 1st.

Ms. Kochanova underlines that the books aim to capture children’s interest, while being easy to understand, containing more illustrations, and explaining terms clearly. “They act as navigators, containing additional reference and information materials: printed and electronic,” she notes.

The Education Ministry has revamped its authorial teams, with 20 percent of authors being teachers. Less than half are from universities, while teaching methodology experts are involved, working directly with teachers. The Ministry has voiced many times its plans to re-issue 78 textbooks and teaching guides by the new academic year, adding electronic supplements to some. Most books are ready, while the remainder are to be released in autumn.
