Last year, the CIS Council of Heads of Government approved a programme of support and development for national sports through until 2020, alongside an action plan to implement the programme for three years. The Festival of National Sports has been instituted by a resolution of the Council for Physical Education and Sport. At the session — held in Minsk recently — the working group deliberated and harmonised a draft provision.

The festival aims to enhance traditionally friendly ties between member states of the Commonwealth, preserving national sports and games as an historical legacy, while promoting and developing them at international level. It is supposed to create conditions for the development and revival of national sports and help include these sports in international competition practice. In particular, 4-5 sports are to be promoted across the CIS, through a joint plan, and every member state will have its own national sports.

The festival is expected to include not only competitions and games, but exhibitions, conferences and gala performances. The organisers believe that the event will help promote a healthy lifestyle, attracting public attention.
