Ministry for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection proposes construction of bio-gas units at waste disposal sites
The Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of Belarus, Andrey Kovtukho, explains his ministry’s position, saying, “We want to introduce separate waste collection in order to prevent organic food waste contaminating recyclable materials. The construction of bio-gas units should be taken into account in building waste burial sites too, and technical decisions taken to ensure that old landfill methane (30 percent) and carbon dioxide (70 percent) are removed. This will enable us to receive economic benefit from these sites, while reducing the environmental burden.” Mr. Kovtukho notes that, at present, only just over 15 percent of waste is being processed in Belarus. He comments, “One of our major tasks is to increase the volume of waste processing, as well as recycling, for future use in production.”
