Belarus is the fourth country in the world where a unique operation was made.An operation of autologous transplantation (a recipient of a transplant is a donor for himself) became a successful accomplishment of a long and severe illness of the only kidney for a 42-year-old patient of an oncological center in Borovliany. The specialists observed a woman within a month after the operation. She was discharged from the hospital in an excellent state.
Specialists are ready to repeat the debut success at any moment.
Such an operation was made in our country for the first time. Besides, the Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Oncology and Medical Radiology is the fourth center in the world, where the technology of autologous transplantation was mastered. The only doctor in Germany and several specialists from Europe and the USA performed such operations before. Professional qualification of Belarusian oncological urologists and transplantologists, corresponding modern instruments and drugs allowed carrying out such treatment in Belarus.
Earlier the only possibility to help people, whose only kidney was destroyed by oncology, was a donated transplantation. It is not a secret for specialists that the process of its engraftment can last several months, and immunosuppressive drug-taking can last several years. That is why an own kidney is preferable.
In spite of the fact that the only patient’s kidney was destroyed by 50 per cent, the doctors took a chance to operate her. This decision wasn’t vain. An organ, cleaned from cancer fragments, engrafted and started functioning. Now a woman can lead a usual life.
“According to our records, almost 5 per cent of people live in Belarus with one kidney,” a doctor said, who was in charge of the team of surgeons, the head of the department of oncourological pathology Oleg Sukonko. “A certain per cent of those people suffers from a malignant tumor of this only organ. We suppose that it will be necessary to make autologous transplantation 10 times per year.
Besides, in the near future the surgeons of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Oncology and Medical Radiology and the Republican Scientific and Practical Center “Cardiology” will master one more unique treatment mode of oncological pathology of a kidney.
