Not enough to reach finals
Minsk hosts week-long Saleo Cup tennis tournament, with prize fund of $25,000, and representatives of 12 countries taking part
In the decisive singles match, Belarusian Vera Lapko (ranked 641st worldwide) lost to Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya (529th) — 4:6, 3:6. “My final performance was not a success,” Vera said after the match. “My rival played superbly and managed to cope better with the strong wind. Meanwhile, I weak-mindedly ceded victory. I’m upset, as I really wanted to win on my home ground. I’ve faced Ms. Kalinskaya six or seven times before, winning the last two matches, so I knew her strong and weak sides. However, under these weather conditions, I failed to realise my plans. If nothing changes, I’ll participate in the Marat Zverev Memorial in Minsk.”
In the doubles, the Belarusian duo of Ilona Kremen and Irina Shimanovich celebrated three victories, to reach the finals. However, they ultimately failed to defeat Brazilian Laura Pigossi and Norwegian Ulrikke Eikeri, losing 2:6, 4:6.
