First investment project to create joint geoportal for Bug Euroregion
First investment project to create joint geoportal for Bug Euroregion

Entitled Geographical Information System Across the Border — a Joint Platform for Territorial Management in the Bug Euroregion, the project is part of the Poland-Belarus-Ukraine cross-border co-operation programme, with total funding in excess of 330,000 Euros. Most of the finances are being provided via international technical aid — such as EU grants — with the aim of promoting cross-border development and improving the investment and tourist appeal of the region.

The geoportal offers a joint database of tourist and economic information about border territories: the Brest Region of Belarus, the Volyn Region of Ukraine, and the Lublin Voivodeship of Poland. It includes geospatial maps with multiple scales and information on tourism, culture, entrepreneurship, education, employment, investment and commercial advertising, power engineering, and land registry. The geoportal is designed for both tourists and investors, alongside entrepreneurs and residents of the Euroregion.

Alexander Ivachev, who is co-ordinating the project and who chairs the Board of the Brest Region Agro-Ecotour Green Tourism Promotion Centre, tells us, “Most of our efforts focus on the cultural and historical identity of the regions and their tourism potential. Information should be of interest not only to local residents, but to those living far away from the Bug Euroregion. Investment-related information should help businesses gain a clear picture of opportunities for implementing investment projects in their home countries, and jointly with members of the Bug Euroregion. He sees the portal as an innovative approach to successfully developing our cross-border territories and notes that the database will be regularly updated
