The development of innovative activity in the country has not gone unnoticed amongst the global community: Belarus has enhanced its position in five international ratings. Last year, it occupied 14th position in the index of information communication technology and 15th in the field of new knowledge. As regards scientific innovations, Belarus has risen from 78th to 53rd place in the space of five years.

The establishment of an innovative production infrastructure, a task set for the years ahead, is expected to enhance GDP research intensity and improve our position even further in the world tables. There will be a focus on production of the 5th and 6th technological levels which are known for the much lower consumption of energy and materials. At the moment, there are only 7.7 percent of such facilities in the country, while around 25 percent still use 1st-3rd level technology. According to the Chairman of the State Committee for Science and Technology, Alexander Shumilin, science is making its contribution to economic development. From 2010-2015, the production volume of new products reached around $10bn. In turn, exports of these new developments, including four-axis trailers, a system for the non-destructive laser testing of materials and a fodder processing device, brought almost $600m into the country.

Development is planned for the areas which are demonstrating sustainable growth in sales markets: information communication, chemical pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, robot machinery, production automation, nano-technology, the production of medical devices and equipment, wood processing and forest chemistry.
