Madonnas and creator

“Judge of Women’s Hearts”, the Belarusian creator of seven hundred Madonna portraits, painter Alexey Kuzmich, celebrates his jubilee

Kuzmich’s name means “otherworldly person” and it does seem that he has made the pursuit of the divine his life’s work. He has been looking for a Temple (not a church, although he is a practicing Orthodox believer) for his seven hundred beautiful portraits of The Madonna. Each one’s eyes are full of bittersweet love, joy and sorrow, motherhood and loss, wisdom and strength.
His studio is too small for them now; like living beings, perhaps they understand that they belong to the Universe. They have been talking to the painter for twenty years — begging him to set them free. Kuzmich seeks a Temple which will be large and light, where they can be viewed by everyone. Looking at them, it seems impossible not to fall in love with these exquisite maidens. He says, “There is nothing more beautiful than a woman; she crowns Nature and symbolizes human consciousness and dignity. Only The Madonna can remind us of the eternal values of mankind and save us land from war and hatred.” Alexey is quite a philosopher — when you listen to him, you feel as if you are ascending to the stars and understanding the essence of yourself and the Universe.
Like any gifted person, it took a while for him to find his place in. He was born on the first summer day of the last year of WW2 — on June 1st, 1945. As a boy, he lived in Mokhro village (in the Ivanov region of the Brest oblast). His father, a front-line soldier, died so he was brought up by his mother and sisters. They became his models for womanhood and he married a woman who became a prototype for his Madonnas. Beautiful Inessa, his wife and the mother of his two children, is frequently depicted on the painter’s canvases. Before marrying, he travelled all over Russia and learnt many good lessons, but he never stopped believing, loving and hoping. Needless to say, he called his most famous painting Faith. Hope. Love. Having seeing this and other works by him in the studio, Mayor of Moscow Yury Luzhkov, knelt to them. Kuzmich explains that part of the Divine exists in each person — especially if a person is talented, irrespective of his occupation. For this reason he has painted the portraits of those whom he admires: actresses Stefania Stanyuta and Galina Makarova, actor Nickolay Yeremenko (Senior) and director Victor Turov.
Kuzmich, Academician of the International Cyril and Methodius Academy of Slavonic Education, maintains that the portraits of The Madonna are his main focus. He constantly enlarges this world, giving his response to the chaos and banality of our time. “Our society has an urgent need to restorate its spiritual values,” Alexey says. “Portraying the Beauty and Divine Beginning in a person are the highest aims of Art, bringing light into people’s lives; we all strive for this light and love.”
His Madonnas can be sure that he will find a Temple for them and they will become a unique permanent gallery. There, his wonderful creations will find a new life; it will be the place where every person will find peace in their heart.
