Long-awaited return

After a year long break, Max Mirnyi returns to Belarus’ national team to play against Denmark during the Davis Cup — scheduled for September 16th-18th in Minsk
Max Mirny last played for the national team a year ago in the away match against the Portuguese (2:3). He played for Belarus’ national team for the first time in 1994 and has since participated in 47 Davis Cup team matches. The tennis player has had 57 victories (24 singles and 33 doubles). Apart from 39-year-old Max, the captain of the Belarusian team, Vladimir Volchkov, is pinning his hopes on Ilya Ivashko (182nd in the world rankings), Yegor Gerasimov (209th) and Yaroslav Shilo (543rd) in the match against Denmark.

The captain of the Danish national team, Kenneth Carlsen, has chosen Frederik Nielsen (426th), Benjamin Hannestada (1070th), Thomas Cromania (unranked) and Andreas Berrehusa (unranked) for the match. Belarus and Denmark have never met in the Davis Cup. In the team world rankings, Belarus occupies 45th place and Denmark is 39th.

This season, the Belarusians beat Egypt (in Cairo) 3:1 in the first round match of the Euro-African zone group. Later, in Minsk, they proved stronger than the Latvians wining 4:1. The Danes defeated first Georgia (in Tbilisi) 5:0 and then beat Finland in a home match 3:2.

The winner of the Belarus-Denmark match will win the right to play next season in the first group of the Europe/Africa Zone in the Davis Cup.
