UNFPA demographic project launched in Belarus with Russian financial assistance

The Support of the National Demographic Security Programme of the Republic of Belarus international technical aid project aims to improve the system of monitoring and assessment of the efficiency of demographic policy, whilst also improving the system of demographic education in the country. The document will become the basis for national demographic policy after 2015. The project is designed to run for 30 months. The total funding allocated is $1.140 million, of which the Russian Federation allocated $900,000, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) provided $180,000, and UNICEF $60,000.

According to the aims of the project, there are plans to conduct analyses to determine the marriage trends and birth rates in Belarus and to carry out Gender and Generation research while also enhancing the qualifications of specialists and assessing the national need for demographers in various areas of socio-economic development.

Minsk has already hosted the signing ceremony for the agreement on the finance for the project. The event was attended by representatives of the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, the United Nations Population Fund and the United Nations Children’s Fund, alongside those from the scientific-educational institutions of Belarus.

The project will be a logical continuation of previous efforts. It consolidates the results achieved through co-operation between the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection and the United Nations Population Fund, aimed at efficient implementation of the National Demographic Security Programme of the Republic of Belarus for 2011-2015.
