“A currency union would be one of the last phases of integration. The date set by the treaty on creating the Eurasian Economic Union, by 2024, is quite far off. Where financial markets lack sufficient stability, of course, we need to approximate this term, considering issues relating to a single payment system, and increasing the share of national currencies in mutual settlements,” noted Mr. Myasnikovich.
Issues of further integration in the currency and financial spheres were recently discussed with Russia, particularly with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and the Chair of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia, Valentina Matviyenko. “We’ve talked about the need to approximate terms of integration, to enable the launch of the first stages of the currency union over the next 3-4 years,” underlines Mr. Myasnikovich.
