Dmitry GrinshpanThe laboratory chief of the Research Institute for Physical Chemical Problems, at the Belarusian State University, Dmitry Grinshpan, has been recognised for his considerable contribution to a joint scientific research project to make biodegradable film. He has also helped promote sci-tech co-operation with establishments across the province.

Mr. Grinshpan has participated in two joint projects with Zhejiang University: producing biodegradable food packaging material (films) and biodegradable natural polymer chitine products. Their successful performance has facilitated the launch of two new projects concerning edible film technologies (used to coat ingested products and protect them from microbes and oxygen until they completely dissolve inside the human body). The development of new ‘waste-free’ technologies is also a promising area, helping address the global environmental problem.

The Vice Governor of the Zhejiang Province has awarded the honour, in the form of a gilded medal, to the Belarusian scientist: one of 35 foreign experts to have been given the award. There are 39,000 scientists, representing 18 countries, working in the Province.

The West Lake Friendship Award is bestowed upon foreign scientists who make a considerable contribution to the development of education, science or culture within the Zhejiang Province.
