Ignat Golovatyuk wins 500m gold at ISU World Junior Speed Skating Championships — setting new Belarusian sprint record
The tournament — held in Chinese Changchun — began with the men’s 500m sprint. Ignat was among the favourites and performed in the strongest group. Jointly with Estonia’s Marten Liiv, the Belarusian demonstrated a result of 35.72 seconds — setting a new Belarusian record in this distance. The previous record (35.77 seconds) lasted for slightly more than a month, being set on February 5th in Minsk, also by Ignat. The Belarusian’s major rivals performed after him. Neither Canadian Christopher Fiola (35.97 seconds and second place), nor his partner — China’s Tao Yang (36.03 second and third place) managed to exceed Ignat’s result.
This is not the first success at a world forum for the Belarusian. Several days previously, he had won silver at the World Cup’s junior stage — also hosted by Chinese Changchun.
The President of Belarus and the President of the National Olympic Committee, Alexander Lukashenko, has sent greetings to Ignat, who won gold at the ISU World Junior Speed Skating Championships in Chinese Changchun. ‘You have conquered a very important summit for our country. This medal and the recent results of the junior team give us hope for the revival of glorious speed skating traditions in Belarus’, his message reads. Mr. Lukashenko also thanked coaches and members of the team, saying, “I sincerely wish you strong health, happiness, and great victories at international competitions.”
