Huge capacity for regional co-operation

On meeting a delegation of the France-Belarus Friendship Group of the National Assembly of France, the Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, Mikhail Myasnikovich, has proposed that Belarus and France organise a forum next year
“As Chairman of the Council of the Republic, which is a body of regional representation, I’m interested in co-operation between regions. Let’s hold a forum of regions of Belarus and France in Minsk in 2017,” notes Mr. Myasnikovich. “This will help us reboot our bilateral relations.”

The Chairman of the Council of the Republic believes there to be political foundations for boosting relations between Belarus and France, helping us strengthen our economic, cultural, scientific and technological ties. Belarus and France already have nineteen agreements, but Mr. Myasnikovich believes there is scope for more. Another seven are currently being negotiated, for which Mr. Myasnikovich has asked French MPs to facilitate the process. These include an agreement on international road transport, a treaty for the avoidance of double taxation, and an agreement on co-operation in the sci-tech sphere.

Mr. Myasnikovich has pointed out that Belarus and France should liaise without intermediaries, saying, “At the level of the European Union, there are many commissions and special rapporteurs acting as middlemen in relations with Belarus.” The Chairman of the Council of the Republic stresses that special rapporteurs frequently address specific issues but are not always interested in finding solutions as much as retaining their posts.
